Greektown Taverna Donates 70 Turkeys For Food Drive

In just four days this week, Greektown Taverna collected 70 turkeys for the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties’ annual Thanksgiving food drive, replacing turkeys lost in the restaurant’s freezer when the power went out during Hurricane Irma in September 2017.

Taki Dimitrakopoulos and his father George were storing turkeys for the Federation’s Jerry Doliner Food Bank when their Ormond Beach restaurant lost electricity during the hurricane — ruining $18,000 worth of food.

The restaurant wanted to replace the turkeys for the Federation’s food bank and offered discounts this week to their patrons who brought in frozen turkeys. The News-Journal wrote about the restaurant’s effort last Sunday.

Within four day, the restaurant collected 70 turkeys, more than replacing the Federation’s 50 turkeys that were lost during the storm, said Jewish Federation President Marvin Miller.

“In just four days since the News-Journal’s Sunday article about the power outage at The Taverna during Hurricane Irma, 70 turkeys have been donated,” said Miller, who was on hand at the Federation’s Ormond Beach food bank when the donated turkeys arrived this week. “Thank you, thank you, thank you to The Greektown Taverna, their customers and The News-Journal.”

The Federation’s Food Bank is seeking donations to provide holiday meals for economically disadvantaged families in the area, as well as to help hurricane victims locally and in Puerto Rico from Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The Federation helps people regardless of race or religion, and 100 percent of donations go directly to provide aid because the Jewish Federation pays all administrative costs.
