The Jerry Doliner Food Bank is asking for donations to provide food, toys and gift cards for the holidays to needy families in Volusia and Flagler counties. Local entrepreneur and philanthropist Gale Lemerand will give a match of $10,000 for donations made during the holiday appeal.

The food bank will give gifts, turkeys, side dishes, desserts and bags of food, enough to last needy families for a week and a half, said Gloria Max, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties, which operates the food bank.

“We have so many people in need in our community and we’re grateful for generous supporters, like Mr. Lemerand, who help the less fortunate during the holidays,” Max said. “We also are in need of gift cards — ones for even $10 or $15 — to give to the tweens and teens. They often are the forgotten children during the holidays.”

The Food Bank helps people regardless of religion or race — and 98 percent of the people receiving aid are not Jewish. One hundred percent of donations go to help the poor because the Federation pays all administrative costs.
